Pledge for a Just Transition to Decent Jobs

What is the Pledge for a Just Transition to Decent Jobs?

The pledge is a group of brave businesses committing to a future that reduces emissions and builds inclusive economies where workers have decent and well paying jobs.

How does this make an impact?

This Pledge signals a company’s commitment to build decent green jobs in every country it operates in, supporting the just transition of the global economy. Additionally, it encourages companies to implement this commitment across their policies and operations to spur the development of green jobs. From human resources and procurement policies to collective bargaining agreements and employment contracts, companies taking this Pledge ensure they’re holistically transforming the way they do business today, for a better tomorrow.

Who is already committed to the just transition pledge?

The Just Transition and Decent Jobs Pledge has been taken by 27 major companies from across the energy and industrial sectors, including some of the world’s largest developers of renewable energy. Some of the companies include: Acciona, Enel, Engie, Ferrovial, Iberdrola, Lewiatan, Ørsted, Sodexo Iberia (Spanish division)

In total, these companies have committed to ensuring over 230,000 directly employed workers across their businesses have green as well as fair, decent and inclusive jobs. They've also extended this commitment to the millions of workers in their supply chains and contractors, magnifying the creation of decent green jobs. The pledge sets a high bar on wages, security of employment, health, safety, and social protection, and companies will need to work hard to meet it. The global union movement is ready to make sure that they do.

What are renewable energy producers and developers pledging to do?

Renewable energy producers and developers pledge to use the following standards with respect to their own employees and to require their contractors to use these standards too:

Renewable energy producers and developers are also committing to increase global and US GW targets and calling on other companies to join them.

What are renewable energy buyers pledging to do?

Renewable energy buyers are pledging to use the same standards as renewable energy producers and developers above, with respect to their own employees, and their contractors as well.

In addition, renewable energy buyers are committing to integrating just transition and the commitments above into all procurement standards for renewable energy purchases. They are also committing to increase or accelerate ambition on renewable energy purchases globally and in the US specifically and calling on other companies to join them.
